Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz believes Ghana are only beginning to show their true potential, insisting the team will continue to improve as they adapt to his tactical philosophy during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions kicked off their Group L campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama, thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic late winner at BMO Field in Toronto.

With the contest seemingly heading for a goalless draw, Brandon Thomas-Asante produced a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, where the 20-year-old midfielder arrived to tap home and hand Ghana a priceless opening victory.

Despite securing all three points, Queiroz believes the Black Stars are still a work in progress and expects greater cohesion and sharper performances as the tournament unfolds.

“We are growing as a team,” the Portuguese coach said.

“We are playing a different system, and our attacking methods are built around the profile of our players.

“We want vertical football and full-speed action. Step by step, the players will improve and adjust to each other.”

Queiroz’s comments reflect his desire to implement an aggressive, fast-paced style that maximizes the qualities of his squad while building stronger understanding between the players.

The opening win has placed Ghana in an encouraging position in Group L, with the Black Stars occupying second place behind England, who began their campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Attention now shifts to Tuesday’s blockbuster clash against the Three Lions at Gillette Stadium in Boston, a match that could prove decisive in the race for a place in the Round of 32.

A positive result against England would significantly strengthen Ghana’s qualification hopes before they wrap up their group-stage campaign against Croatia four days later.

Having made the perfect start, the Black Stars are aiming to build momentum and secure a return to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in South Africa in 2010, with Queiroz confident his side will become stronger with every game.
