Ghana football legend Dan Owusu has attributed the Black Stars recent abysmal performances to inconsistency in player selection.
Ghana, four-time African Champions, have dropped from Africa’s top 10 ranking after the disastrous campaign in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars exited the competition from the group stages after losing to debutants Comoros Islands.
Dan Owusu, a former Black Stars striker says the team’s inconsistency due to player selection by coaches and also the over reliance on foreign-based players is the cause.
“To get a strong starting lineup for the Black Stars now is very difficult. Every coach has players he calls which brings inconsistency to the team. We have many Ghanaian players locally and others in Europe who are very good footballers yet when coaches are making call ups, they choose more foreign players than the local players”, he told Koforidua-based radio station Bryt FM.
The former Bechem United coach, however, believes that a strong and competitive league will also help to produce quality players for the senior national team.
“If we are able to build our league (GPL) well we can easily make call ups which will yield productive results. Local players always want to make name for themselves and for that matter, will go all out and give out their best to the team”
“During our time as Black Stars players there was constituency in our call ups, so we were able to deliver during matches. But now we haven’t gotten a solid team for the National team which makes it bad”, he added.
Ghana will host the Super Eagles of Nigeria on 25th March, 2022 at the Cape Coast Stadium in the first leg of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers play-offs.
The return leg is slated for 29th March, 2022 in Abuja.
