According to Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani, Daniel Siebert, the referee for the 2022 World Cup match between Ghana and Uruguay, should go to jail if found guilty of striking the VAR monitor.
After the match concluded 2-0 in their favour last December, the seasoned attacker and his colleagues protested some calls made by the referee.
In the view of the South Americans, they deserved a penalty against the four-time African champions but were denied the favour by the German official.
The Black Stars and Uruguay were both eliminated from the World Cup because Uruguay required one more goal to go to the knockout round.
In an interview with El Larguero (via El Pais), Cavani discussed the refereeing and remarked, “If they sanction me for having hit the VAR, the referee should have to be put in prison [for his mistakes].
“There have been errors that with the VAR and with the cameras, all the referees that are behind it should not make.”
He concluded: “It is true that we have to behave, but we are human beings and many times it happens on a field when you live with passion and work hard and you have to experience situations like these, which is not the first time we have to deal with it.
“And there it can be that the reactions can be a little more forgiven, not justified.”
Despite the win over Ghana, Uruguay also failed to progress from the group stage.
