There is no quota for local players – Nana Oduro Sarfo on Black Stars call-up

Executive Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Nana Oduro Sarfo, says there is no percentage allocation for home-based players in the senior national team, hence they will always have to fight with foreign players for a call-up.

Oduro Sarfo was speaking after Chris Hughton announced a 25-man squad for Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers doubleheader against Angola this month, where no local player was included.

According to him, the players called up are currently at a better level compared to local players while adding that until local players are given allocation, they will always have to fight for a spot like everyone.

“There is no quota. Until we decide that there should be a quota — maybe 30% should be local players, so be it,” he told Joy Sports.

“Most of the players out there [in the squad], some came from the U-23. I have nothing against the selection of players, all I want is Ghana winning the game [against Angola].”

“Black Stars call-ups are based on your performance for a period. If we have so many players in Europe and their performances are good juxtaposed against the local players here, they are a shade ahead of them, what do you want us to do?” he quizzed.
