Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have jointly expressed their interest in hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with the Confederation of African Football (Caf) receiving the bid.
Alongside these East African neighbors, Algeria, Botswana, and Egypt have also shown their interest in hosting the biennial tournament. Egypt, which hosted Afcon in 2019, and Algeria, which hosted the African Nations Championship (Chan) earlier this year, are likely to meet the necessary infrastructure requirements.
However, it remains uncertain how much investment will be required to support Botswana’s or the East African joint bid to succeed.
Kenya has only one stadium, Nyayo National Stadium, that Caf approves for international games, located in its capital, Nairobi. The country lost its right to host the 2018 Chan four months prior to the finals, as several venues were not prepared.
However, the Kenyan government has issued a statement in December, revealing its intent to revitalize football as a key element of its national social fabric, including the rebuilding of its national men’s and women’s teams.
The final official plans from the four bidders are due by May 23, followed by inspection visits in June and July. Caf has yet to decide who will host the 2025 Afcon, following Guinea’s withdrawal due to insufficient preparation in October.
