On the eve of their crucial CAF Confederations Cup semi-final second leg against Young Africans, players of Marumo Gallants have refused to train due to alleged financial disagreements with the club.
Marumo Gallants have defied expectations throughout their CAFCC campaign, topping their group and eliminating powerful Egyptian giants Pyramids in the quarter-finals.
However, their task has become more challenging as the players were dissatisfied with the minimal bonuses offered by chairman Abram Sello for reaching the final. As a result, they decided to go on strike and refused to train on Tuesday afternoon, less than 48 hours before the second leg at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday.
According to reports, the players were angered by the offer of only R1,000 as a bonus in the event of overturning the first-leg defeat.
It is worth noting that Gallants have already secured $450,000 (R8.25 million) as semi-finalists, and this amount could increase to $625,000 (R11.5 million) if they reach the final, with 10% of the money going to the South African Football Association. The winners of the Confederation Cup will receive $1.25 million (R23 million).
Liaison officer Rufus Matsena declined to comment on the strike, citing other responsibilities at the stadium.
The club has since issued a statement addressing the situation.
