Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has been named among the nominees for the 2026 CAF Men’s Young Player of the Year award after enjoying a breakthrough campaign for both club and country.
The 20-year-old Black Stars midfielder is one of 10 players shortlisted for the prestigious accolade, which recognises the finest young football talent on the African continent.
Yirenkyi earned widespread acclaim with his performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where he emerged as one of Ghana’s standout players despite making his debut at the global tournament.
The talented midfielder etched his name into Ghanaian football history by scoring the decisive goal in the Black Stars’ 1-0 victory over Panama, becoming the youngest Ghanaian ever to score at a FIFA World Cup. His goal proved crucial as Ghana advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2010.
His impressive displays on the world’s biggest stage attracted interest from several European clubs before Premier League side Coventry City secured his signature, marking another significant step in his rapidly developing career.
Equally effective in breaking up opposition attacks and driving his team forward, Yirenkyi has quickly established himself as one of Ghana’s most exciting midfield prospects, with his composure, work rate and technical quality earning praise from fans and pundits alike.
The Ghanaian, however, faces stiff competition for the continental award. The shortlist includes Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Ibrahim Maza, Barcelona youngster Hamza Abdelkarim, Christian Kofane, Yan Diomande, Christ Inao, Ismaël Kamissoko, Abdellah Ouazane, Ayoub Bouaddi and Ibrahima Mbaye.
The winner will be announced at the 2026 CAF Awards ceremony on December 7 in Lagos, Nigeria, where Africa’s finest players, coaches and teams will be recognised.
Yirenkyi’s nomination caps a memorable year that has seen him evolve from one of Ghana’s brightest emerging talents into a player widely regarded as one of the continent’s most promising young stars.
