Yaw Preko, a former Ghanaian international footballer, has opened up about his unique football loyalties, revealing that despite playing for Hearts of Oak, he considers himself a fan of their rivals, Asante Kotoko, by “blood,” while still holding Hearts of Oak close to his heart.
Preko’s journey with Hearts of Oak began in a controversial transfer from Powerlines FC at the age of 16. He represented the Phobians from 1991 to 1992, leaving a lasting impression by scoring nine goals in 31 games before venturing abroad to play for Anderlecht in Belgium.
In an interview with E.TV Ghana Sports, the former winner of the FIFA U-17 tournament in 1993 delved into the intricacies of his allegiance. Preko disclosed that his profound love for Asante Kotoko is deeply rooted in his family, as every member passionately supports the club.
“I grew up in an Asante Kotoko household. Everyone in my family supports Asante Kotoko. Formerly, when Hearts of Oak beat Kotoko, I even starved myself because the feeling was so hurtful,” he shared.
Preko went on to have an outstanding career in Europe, joining the renowned Belgian giants Anderlecht in 1992 and later playing in Turkey from 1997 to 2004.
After retiring from active playing football in 2008, Preko ventured into coaching. He began as an assistant coach for Ghana’s U20 team from 2012 to 2013.
Throughout his coaching career, he has managed various clubs including Inter Allies, Medeama, Hearts of Oak, and Ifeanyi Ubah F.C. His most recent coaching role was with Accra Great Olympics in February 2023.
