Medeama target CAF Champions League money zone berth if they win 2022/23 Premier League title

Toni Aubynn, the board chairman of Tarkwa-based Premier League side Medeama SC, has set the club’s target on reaching the money zone in this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) club competition.

Medeama currently leads the betPawa Premier League with 57 points and only one match remaining, making them strong contenders for a spot in the continental club competition.

With a three-point lead over second-placed Bechem United, Medeama will host Tamale City in the final week of the 2022/23 Premier League at the Akoon Park.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Toni Aubynn, who also serves as the chairman of the Black Galaxies management committee, emphasized the importance of reaching the money zone. While he would have loved to see Medeama win the CAF Champions League, he believes their investment should not go to waste, and securing a place in the money zone is a realistic target.

“I have always been disrespectful of lower targets, I think the ultimate is to win but realistically, you need to enter into the money zone because if you put in all your effort and investment and you don’t actually get to the money zone, you would have spent money for nothing”, he stressed.

“We are confident of winning the league, we think that we have been hard done by nature you remember that during the nomalisation period, we were in a comfortable lead and then the league was truncated.

While confident in their chances of winning the league, Aubynn highlighted the challenges Medeama has faced in previous years when they were in a favorable position to claim the title. He expressed the club’s belief that they deserve to win the league this season, given the circumstances they have encountered.

“Then before COVID-19, we were also in the lead when government postponed the league and we think we have not been fairly treated by nature so it’s our time to win”, Dr Aubynn said.

Aubynn expressed his discontent with the situation where clubs win the local league but fail to participate in continental competitions. He considered this an indictment on the country and called for government intervention to provide financial support to qualifying teams.

He emphasized the significant employment contribution made by the clubs and stressed the need for the government not to leave them alone when competing in such tournaments. He expressed hope that Medeama would receive support from the state as they embark on their campaign.
