Medeama SC, the champions of the Ghana Premier League, are close to finalizing a partnership with Fiase Golden Royal Ladies FC, based in Tarkwa.
This collaboration is in preparation for Medeama’s upcoming campaign in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.
Last week, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) outlined the procedures for obtaining the license to participate in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions for the 2023-24 season. One of the key requirements is for every club to have a women’s football team in order to be eligible for the license.
In line with the goal of empowering women and promoting women’s football, CAF has stipulated that any men’s team without a women’s team will be disqualified from participating in CAF inter-club competitions starting from the 2023-24 season.
A circular from the CAF Club Licensing Board to member associations highlighted the necessity for clubs to have a women’s team to qualify for the 2023-24 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. However, clubs that desire to participate in the CAF Club competitions can form an affiliation with an entity that operates a women’s first team club.
Consequently, clubs are required to join forces with one of the women’s premier league teams to obtain the license for the CAF inter-club competitions in the upcoming season.
Fiase Golden Royal Ladies FC currently competes in the Western Region Division One Women’s League.
Medeama concluded the season with an impressive tally of 60 points from 34 matches, consisting of 18 wins, six draws, and 10 defeats. They scored 44 goals while conceding 29, securing their position as champions.
This marks the third major title in the history of Ghanaian football for Medeama, having previously won the FA Cup in 2013 and 2015.
As the sole representative of Ghana, Medeama will proudly participate in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League next year.
