In the EFL Cup match on Tuesday night, Ghanaian forward Brandon Thomas-Asante managed to score a consolation goal for West Bromwich Albion, but his effort wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat to Stoke City.
The turning point of the game occurred in the second half when Vidigal found the net from close range in the 65th minute, barely a minute after Thomas-Asante had equalized for West Bromwich Albion.
Stoke City had a notable advantage throughout the match, creating numerous scoring opportunities, which intensified after the halftime interval.
Stoke’s lead at halftime was well-deserved, courtesy of Wesley’s commanding play that capitalized on a defensive error by West Brom’s Kyle Bartley. Wesley’s powerful shot hit the post and then the young goalkeeper, Josh Griffiths, before finding the back of the net, leaving the Baggies trailing as the teams headed into the break.
Despite West Bromwich Albion making significant changes with nine new players, their revamped lineup couldn’t withstand Stoke’s persistent pressure. Stoke City capitalized on the opportunity to secure their advancement in the EFL Cup, thanks to Vidigal’s decisive strike.
Manager Alex Neil’s team demonstrated solid defensive prowess to maintain their lead against a West Brom side that faced a challenging pre-season and is now dealing with the setback of two consecutive losses in their opening fixtures.
