Ex-Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah, as he expressed optimism about the Black Stars’ chances in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be hosted in Ivory Coast next year.
The four-time African champions last secured the coveted title in 1982 in Libya and have since faced challenges in ending their trophy drought.
With only months remaining until the tournament kicks off, Appiah, who led the country to qualify for the 2006 and 2010 World Cup, believes Ghana can overcome their 41-year trophyless streak. He emphasized the importance of self-belief for the players.
“I am very confident that Ghana can win the Afcon,” he declared during the unveiling of the TotalEnergies AFCON trophy at the TotalEnergies Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
In addressing the competitive nature of modern football, Appiah highlighted the challenges, stating, “Today football is played everywhere, and that’s why you’ll find it difficult to even play Comoros.”
He urged the team to have faith in themselves and represent Ghana with pride, saying, “They should go out there and represent Ghana the best they can.”
Ghana is placed in Group B alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The AFCON is scheduled to commence on January 13, 2024, and conclude on February 11, 2024.
