2023 AFCON Preview: Zambia vs Tanzania

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations continues as Zambia is poised to confront Tanzania at Stade de San Pedro on Sunday afternoon. Concurrently, tournament favorites Morocco, leading the group, are scheduled to take on second-placed Congo DR earlier in the day at the same venue.

Zambia, making a return after missing the last three AFCON editions, endeavored to secure their first tournament triumph since their unexpected victory in 2012 when they faced Congo DR on Wednesday. Despite encountering difficulties in creating goal-scoring opportunities and managing just three shots, Chipolopolo clinched a crucial point with a 1-1 draw.

Under the guidance of Avram Grant, Zambia took the lead in the first half with a clever goal from Kings Kangwa, capitalizing on Lionel Mpasi’s positioning after an attempt to tackle Patson Daka. While the outcome fell short of a victory, Zambia looks to build on this performance, buoyed by their unbeaten record against Tanzania in their last four encounters.

In contrast, Tanzania faced a formidable challenge against Morocco, and their offensive struggles were apparent throughout the entire 90 minutes. With a mere two touches in Morocco’s box, it marked their lowest tally in AFCON history and the lowest among all teams in the first round.

Having never secured a win in AFCON history, Tanzania’s defeat against Morocco added to their predicaments. The suspension of Adel Amrouche for eight matches, following a complaint by Morocco regarding insulting remarks, prompted a coaching change. Hemed Morocco has been appointed as the acting coach for the remainder of the tournament, with assistance from Juma Mgunda.

Despite the setbacks, Tanzania is determined to rebound and secure their first-ever AFCON victory. The coaching transition introduces an element of adjustment for the team, and they face a motivated Zambia side eager to capitalize on their historical success against the Taifa Stars. As the dynamics of Group F unfold, Sunday’s matches promise both redemption and additional challenges for the participating nations.
