2023 AFCON Preview: Ghana face Mozambique in a DO-OR-DIE showdown on Monday

As Group B in the Africa Cup of Nations approaches its conclusion, Ghana faces a pivotal moment, striving to keep its qualification hopes alive in a crucial clash against Mozambique at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara on Monday night.

Ghana occupies a precarious position in the group, residing in third place with a mere point. Their opponents, Mozambique, share the same tally but find themselves at the bottom of the standings. The Black Stars teeter on the edge of a second consecutive AFCON group-stage exit.

After a 12-year absence from the AFCON, Mozambique stands alongside Ghana in the pursuit of advancement, both teams grappling with identical requirements to stay in the competition.

Despite their shared predicament, historical trends appear to favor Ghana. Mozambique, affectionately known as The Mambas, has never clinched victory in an AFCON group-stage encounter. Their record reveals 12 losses and two draws over five tournaments, a narrative they aim to reshape in this pivotal match.

Compounding Mozambique’s challenges is their inability to maintain a clean sheet in the continental competition. With 31 goals conceded in 14 AFCON matches, they face the risk of matching Zimbabwe’s 15-game streak without a clean sheet unless rectified in Monday’s clash.

Chiquinho Conde’s squad showed promise in their opener against Egypt, securing a 2-1 lead before being thwarted by a late penalty, resulting in a heart-wrenching draw. The subsequent encounter with Cape Verde saw defensive lapses leading to a 2-1 defeat, placing Mozambique on the precipice of elimination.

Haunted by memories of a tournament exit two years prior, Ghana faces a similar fate if they stumble in this crucial encounter, potentially concluding at the bottom of Group B. Their AFCON 2024 campaign commenced on a disheartening note with a 3-0 defeat against group leaders Cape Verde, escalating the pressure.

In their second match against Egypt, Ghana showcased improvement but couldn’t secure a win, marking their sixth consecutive AFCON match without victory—a historic low in their six-decade involvement in the competition.

A victory against Mozambique won’t guarantee automatic qualification for Ghana, contingent on Egypt’s result against Cape Verde. However, accumulating four points would likely position them favorably among the best third-placed teams.

As the teams gear up for the showdown, Mozambique’s recent form includes a draw and a loss in AFCON, while their broader competition record reflects a win, a draw, and three losses. Ghana, on the other hand, has endured a loss and a draw in AFCON, with their overall form revealing a win, a loss, and three draws. The stage is set for a decisive Group B showdown, where each moment carries the potential to reshape the fate of these teams in the Africa Cup of Nations.
