The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) is reeling from a shocking age fraud scandal, which has led to the suspension of 62 players after compelling evidence surfaced indicating they had falsified their ages, with discrepancies spanning over a decade in some cases.
Among the high-profile individuals implicated in the scandal is Wilfried Nathan Douala, a player who gained prominence as a 17-year-old sensation during the AFCON 2023 tournament.
Douala, a midfielder for Victoria United, made headlines when he represented the Indomitable Lions at the recent Africa Cup of Nations, where his age was notably listed as 17 years old. However, FECAFOOT’s thorough investigation has uncovered Douala’s true age, revealing him to be one of the players suspended for providing false information about their ages, under the charge of “double identity.”
In a statement addressing the matter, FECAFOOT highlighted the suspension of these players, including Douala, citing suspicions of concealing their actual ages.
For Douala, who experienced a meteoric rise during AFCON 2023 before returning to Victoria United, the scandal has cast a shadow over his burgeoning career, raising questions about his integrity and eligibility to compete at the international level.
The revelations surrounding age manipulation within African football youth setups have sparked significant concerns about the sport’s integrity, with FECAFOOT’s decisive action underscoring the pervasive nature of the issue.
The scandal surrounding Douala has shattered the image of a teen prodigy that he seemed to embody during AFCON 2023. Prior to the tournament, doubts had already emerged about his age, prompting widespread discussions among football enthusiasts on social media.
