Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has disclosed that defender Baba Abdul Rahman is hesitant to return to the Black Stars. Rahman, who was absent from the squad during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, continues to be reluctant about rejoining the national team.
The former Chelsea defender had previously opted out of international duty before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to focus on his club career. Speaking at a press conference during the announcement of the squad for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger, Addo explained Rahman’s hesitation.
“Baba Rahman has family obligations, and last time, I appealed to the media to tone down the criticism. However, he is still reluctant to return due to what happened previously. But the door remains open for his return,” Addo stated.
In Rahman’s absence, notable players like Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Salisu, and Jordan Ayew have been named in the 23-man squad. Meanwhile, Captain Andre Ayew, currently a free agent, has been omitted for the second consecutive time.
The Black Stars are set to face Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Morocco on September 9. These qualifiers are crucial for Ghana as they aim to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON.
The top two teams from each group will earn automatic qualification to the continent’s premier tournament.
