Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has made it clear that the possibility remains for English internationals of Ghanaian descent, Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi, to switch allegiance and play for the Black Stars.
Despite both players having already represented England, they remain eligible to switch to Ghana under FIFA regulations. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been in discussions with the duo, hoping to convince them to join the national team.
Nketiah, who currently plays for Arsenal, has earned just one cap for England, while Hudson-Odoi, now with Nottingham Forest, has three appearances for the Three Lions. Their limited involvement with England keeps the option open for a potential switch to Ghana.
During the announcement of the 23-man squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger, Addo confirmed that the door remains open for the English-born players.
“The door is still open for Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah, but it’s always about quality,” Addo remarked.
As the Black Stars prepare to face Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Morocco on September 9, these qualifiers are critical for Ghana’s aspirations to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON. The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for Africa’s premier football competition.
