“Asante Kotoko fans don’t care about the distance if we are winning games” – Prosper Narteh Ogum

Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, remains optimistic that the Porcupine Warriors’ fan base will remain loyal despite the challenges posed by a venue change in the ongoing Ghana Premier League.

The club is among those affected by the temporary closure of major stadiums, including the Baba Yara Stadium, due to renovations. With Kotoko now playing their home games at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi, Ogum is confident that passionate supporters will continue to follow the team regardless of the distance.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3Sports, Ogum praised the dedication of Kotoko fans, expressing certainty that their commitment to the club would outweigh any logistical inconveniences.

“Even though we are going to Obuasi, I know a typical Kotoko supporter who really loves Kotoko will travel and come to Obuasi,” Ogum stated. “If we go to Obuasi and we do well, these supporters will travel and come there. They don’t care about the distance. Once Kotoko is playing well and winning, wherever you take Kotoko, our supporters will come.”

However, Ogum did admit that the venue change could have financial implications for the club, with potential lower attendance figures compared to matches held at their traditional home ground in Kumasi.

“If we were to play in our own stadium, most of the revenue that would be generated would come to us. But I’m sure where we are going to [Obuasi], we’ll have fewer numbers than playing at Baba Yara,” Ogum added.

Asante Kotoko will now host recently promoted Young Apostles on Sunday, September 24, in their second match of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season. The team will be looking to improve on their dismal home record from last season, where they finished as the fourth-worst home side in the league with just 30 points.
