Former Ghana coach Charles Akonnor remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite a challenging start in the qualifiers.
The Black Stars began their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Angola at Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger, placing them third in Group F with just one point.
“Qualifying should not be a problem. I will be surprised if they don’t qualify, but we have to do well when we play in the competition proper,” Akonnor told Graphic Sports, expressing his confidence in the team’s ability to secure a spot in the tournament.
Ghana now faces a crucial doubleheader against Sudan, with the first leg set for October 10 at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by the return leg on October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya. These matches will be pivotal for the Black Stars as they seek to improve their standing in the group.
The team opened camp with 11 players, with the rest expected to join for full training sessions ahead of the upcoming fixtures. The 2025 AFCON tournament is scheduled to be hosted in Morocco.
