Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor remains hopeful for a turnaround for the senior national team following a difficult start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Under the guidance of current coach Otto Addo, the team experienced a rocky beginning, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Angola at Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a disappointing 1-1 draw against Niger.
In light of these disappointing results, Akonnor expressed his frustration but maintained his belief in the team’s potential to recover. “It’s not good to play two matches and get one point, but I know and hope they will bounce back,” he stated in an interview with Graphic Sports.
As it stands, the Black Stars occupy third place in their group, having secured just one point from their two matches. They are set to continue their qualifying campaign with two crucial fixtures against Sudan in Matchdays three and four.
The first leg is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with the return leg taking place on October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.
On Monday, the Black Stars held their first training session at the Accra Sports Stadium, featuring 11 players, with additional squad members expected to join for the second training session later today.
