“Ghana Premier League no longer attractive to sponsors” – Yahaya Mohammed

Former Asante Kotoko and Aduana Stars striker Yahaya Mohammed has voiced concerns about the Ghana Premier League’s current lack of appeal, which he believes is deterring potential sponsors.

The league has been without a headline sponsor since betPawa withdrew its support midway through last season, leaving the top division struggling to secure major financial backing.

In a recent interview with Asempa FM, the ex-OGC Nice forward shared his thoughts on why corporate investors are hesitant to engage with Ghanaian football. “The Ghana Premier League at this moment is not attractive,” he said. “During my days, sponsors were eager to partner with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and even sought to sponsor tournaments like the GHALCA Top Four.”

Mohammed highlighted the difference in incentives, noting that many players now prefer leagues in countries like Rwanda and Ethiopia, where the financial benefits are more substantial. He also pointed to insufficient television coverage as a contributing factor, arguing that poor media exposure further discourages investment.

“Today, sponsors are not interested because the Premier League is unattractive. Players are interested in playing in Rwanda and Ethiopia because of the better incentives they will receive, unlike what they will earn by playing in the Ghana Premier League.

“The television coverage for the league is not good enough and all these things push away the corporate world to invest and sponsor the Premier League,” he added.

The Ghana Premier League’s Matchday 10 fixtures will continue this weekend, but the league’s financial uncertainties remain a pressing concern for stakeholders.
