Kwesi Appiah leads Sudan to first AFCON qualification since 2012

Ghanaian coach James Kwesi Appiah has successfully led Sudan to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking the country’s first appearance in the tournament in over a decade.

Appiah, who took charge of Sudan’s national team in September 2023, has worked diligently to assemble a competitive squad with the dual aim of securing AFCON qualification and preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In their final Group F encounter, Sudan faced Angola, who had already qualified for the 2025 AFCON. Needing just a point to advance, Sudan held their nerve in a tense goalless draw to secure second place in the group with 8 points, edging out Niger by a single point.

The achievement underscores Appiah’s transformative impact on Sudanese football. When he took the helm, the team had been out of the continental spotlight since 2012.

While Sudan celebrates, Ghana, a traditional AFCON powerhouse, suffered a disappointing campaign, finishing at the bottom of Group F with just 3 points, marking their first failure to qualify for the tournament in two decades.

With Sudan’s qualification secured, Kwesi Appiah and his team will now shift their focus to preparing for the 2025 tournament in Morocco, where they hope to make a strong impact on the continental stage.
