Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has urged for a complete reset of sports in Ghana after the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco.
This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will not compete in the prestigious continental tournament, having finished last in Group F with just three points from six matches and no victories.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Afriyie Ankrah expressed his disappointment over the team’s performance and the state of Ghanaian sports, emphasizing the need for a thorough reassessment. He particularly pointed out the unsporting behavior from fans during the recent match, highlighting the incident when fans jeered as Mohamed Kudus was preparing to take a penalty.
“It was very, very sad, particularly when Kudus was going to take the penalty and the crowd was jeering at him. I was shocked,” Afriyie Ankrah said. “I’ve never seen anything like that, and I think it’s time for the entire country to take a closer look at the Black Stars, soccer, and sports in general, and rethink our approach. It’s time for a reset.”
Following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, the Management Committee has been dissolved, and the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council is set to meet today to discuss the future of head coach Otto Addo.
