Former Ghanaian international Ibrahim Sunday has identified the lack of a clear succession plan as the primary reason for the recent struggles of the Black Stars.
The Ghanaian national team, a four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, has faced sharp criticism following its dismal performance in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. For the first time in two decades, Ghana will miss the tournament, set to be held in Morocco.
The Black Stars finished at the bottom of Group F, managing only three points from six matches with three draws and three defeats.
Speaking in an interview, Ibrahim Sunday highlighted the absence of long-term planning as a key factor behind the team’s poor performance.
“The Black Stars is struggling because we didn’t plan for the future. We enjoyed the Black Stars in previous years without putting in place a succession plan. We should have introduced players into the team for the future,” he explained.
Ghana will look to bounce back in March 2025 during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they are scheduled to face Chad and Madagascar.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the future of head coach Otto Addo, as the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association is yet to decide on his tenure.
