Former Ghana international Sam Johnson has advised Baba Rahman to consider ending his Black Stars career amid calls for the defender’s return to the national team.
The Greece-based left-back, who currently plays for PAOK, has been in exceptional form since joining the Greek Super League, scoring crucial goals for his club. Despite his performances reigniting interest in his return, Rahman has not featured for Ghana since withdrawing from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year.
In an interview with Pan-Africa Football, Johnson expressed concern over the criticism Rahman has faced in the past and urged him to prioritize his club career.
“If I were him [Baba Rahman], I wouldn’t come because he has suffered a lot from Ghanaians, including some of us,” Johnson said. “It’s not going well for him when he comes, and we don’t see the Baba Rahman we used to know. He has received a lot of criticism. If I were him, I wouldn’t care whether I’m playing like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo; I wouldn’t return.
“That decision is up to him, but if I were in his position, I’d be done with the national team.”
Baba Rahman has been a standout performer for PAOK this season, scoring three goals in 10 Greek Super League appearances. He has also impressed in the Europa League, netting twice in seven matches.
The 29-year-old, who previously played for Chelsea and Reading, has been viewed as a potential solution to Ghana’s struggles at left-back. However, Johnson’s remarks suggest that a return to the Black Stars might come at a cost to Rahman’s mental and professional stability.
