Albert Amoah’s late heroics sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory for Asante Kotoko over their arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in a tense encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday. The forward capitalized on a costly defensive mix-up in added time to hand Kotoko all three points.

The decisive moment stemmed from a miscommunication between Hearts defender Kelvin Osei Asibey and goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, whose otherwise stellar performances were overshadowed by their late-game error. Amoah reacted swiftly to the confusion, calmly slotting the ball into the net to clinch the win in the dying moments.

Kotoko started the game on the front foot, pressing high and unsettling Hearts of Oak with their intensity. Within the first 30 seconds, Asare was forced into a stunning save to deny Kotoko an early goal.

Despite Kotoko’s dominance in the opening stages, Hearts grew into the game and began to control possession. However, their efforts yielded little in the way of clear-cut chances, as they resorted to speculative long-range efforts that posed no real threat to Kotoko’s goalkeeper.

The first half saw Amoah come close on multiple occasions. In the 30th minute, a perfectly timed tackle from Osei Asibey denied him a clear scoring opportunity. Moments later, Amoah thought he had broken the deadlock after finishing off a slick team move, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Kotoko’s Baba Yahaya then missed a golden chance to score just before the break, blasting his shot over the bar after beating his defender.

Hearts of Oak began the second half with renewed energy, driven by the creative influence of midfielder Salim Adams. Adams orchestrated several attacking moves, including a perfect setup for Kwabena Boateng, but a crucial defensive intervention by Kotoko thwarted what seemed a certain goal. Both teams continued to battle fiercely, trading opportunities, but neither side could convert as the clock ticked down.

Just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Amoah struck in added time. His decisive goal sparked wild celebrations from Kotoko coach Prosper Ogum, who threw off his red tie and embraced his players on the field in an emotional display of joy. The victory marked Kotoko’s third consecutive league win over Hearts, further cementing their dominance in Ghana’s storied football rivalry.

The result sees Kotoko climb to sixth on the league table, leapfrogging Hearts, who now sit seventh. For Hearts, the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, having matched their rivals for much of the game only to fall short at the very end.
