Kamaldeen Sulemana had a night to forget as Southampton endured a crushing 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League clash on Sunday.
The Ghanaian winger, making his first start of the season, was substituted after just 15 minutes with the Saints already trailing 3-0. The early collapse began just 36 seconds into the match, when James Maddison coolly finished past Alex McCarthy. Tottenham’s relentless attack continued with quick goals from Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski, leaving Southampton in disarray.
Southampton manager Russell Martin made the tough call to replace Kamaldeen with defender Nathan Wood in an effort to stabilize the defense. The decision, however, clearly upset the 22-year-old, who was seen arguing with assistant coach Matt Gill on the sidelines.
“I feel for Kamaldeen, but we’re 3-0 down in 14 minutes,” Martin explained after the game. “At that point, we needed a defender to plug the gaps. It’s not about his performance, and I feel bad for him that it’s him, but we had to do something.”
Despite the tactical adjustment, Southampton struggled to contain Spurs’ aggression and failed to mount a comeback. The heavy defeat adds to a difficult season for the Saints, while Kamaldeen will be hoping for better fortunes and more chances to prove himself in upcoming matches.
