“I became too powerful that’s why they sacked me from Hearts of Oak” – Gladson Awako

Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Gladson Awako has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his departure from the club, pointing to internal power dynamics as the key reason.

Awako, who joined the Phobians in 2021, parted ways with the club in September 2023 after a period of mixed fortunes. Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, the experienced midfielder disclosed that his growing influence within the team played a pivotal role in his exit.

“Hearts of Oak is a very political club,” Awako remarked. “At a point, they thought I was becoming too powerful, so they had to get rid of me. But personally, I had no issues.”

He attributed this perception of power to the leadership responsibilities entrusted to him by then-head coach Slavko Matic.

“The leadership roles I received from the coach gave me a certain level of authority. They felt that if I continued to grow in influence, it wouldn’t favor certain individuals, so they decided to let me go,” he added.

Now plying his trade with Great Olympics in the Division One League, Awako remains one of Ghana’s most experienced midfielders, with a career spanning stints in the Ghana Premier League and international competitions.
