Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has admitted that referees officiating in the Ghana Premier League are owed some outstanding allowances. However, he assured that these payments would be made soon.
“It is not unusual for referees to be owed. Even CAF, WAFU, and FIFA sometimes owe referees, but the current situation is much better compared to the past,” he explained during an interview with Akoma FM.
He further clarified the payment arrangement, stating, “We agreed to pay them every five weeks, and as it stands, referees have received their allowances for weeks 1 to 5. The remaining weeks will be settled very soon.”
Since Kurt Okraku assumed office as GFA President, the association has made significant strides in improving the welfare of referees. This includes better remuneration and deliberate efforts to enhance their performance on the field.
Henry Asante Twum’s assurance comes as the Ghana Premier League approaches Week 15, set to commence on Thursday, December 26.
