“I felt isolated as Black Stars captain due to internal politics” – Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has shed light on the difficulties he faced during his tenure as leader of the Black Stars, accusing certain individuals of creating divisions and undermining his authority.

In an Instagram Live session, Gyan candidly reflected on the internal struggles that impacted his time as captain, claiming he often felt isolated despite his efforts on the field.

“In my time as captain of the national team, I was alone. I only delivered on the field,” Gyan remarked. “The younger players would initially be excited to see me, but within days, they would start avoiding me. This was because they had been brainwashed.”

The Black Stars’ all-time top scorer, with 51 goals, suggested that influential figures within the team created discord, leading to a lack of respect from younger players.

“People brainwashed the kids against me, so they didn’t respect me. After my departure, you can see the effect. Go back and look at the kids who were brainwashed—where are they now?” he questioned.

Gyan also addressed controversies during his captaincy, particularly criticism over his decision to place his image on the captain’s armband.

“Instead of celebrating my 50th goal, people were focused on the fact that my face was on the captain’s armband,” he lamented.

Gyan, who captained the Black Stars from 2012 to 2019, highlighted how these internal divisions have long been a source of tension within the team. Despite the challenges, his legacy as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer remains intact, although his leadership era continues to evoke mixed reactions.
