Otto Addo is not good enough to coach Black Stars – Osei Palmer

Former Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Wilfred Osei Kweku Palmer, has expressed his dissatisfaction with Otto Addo’s performance as head coach of the Black Stars, stating that he is not the right man to lead Ghana’s senior national team.

The 49-year-old coach has faced intense criticism following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years. Despite playing six matches in Group F, the team managed only three draws and suffered three defeats, finishing at the bottom of the group.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Osei Palmer made his position on Otto Addo clear, pointing to the coach’s underwhelming record. “I’ve always been clear with my opinion on Otto Addo—that he is not the right man,” he said. “If you look at the results that he has been producing, do you think he is doing well?”

Palmer also drew comparisons between Otto Addo and former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah, who faced dismissal due to poor results but has since led Sudan to qualify for the 2025 AFCON. “We said Kwasi Appiah should be sacked because he was not good, but he is the one who has helped Sudan to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and beat us in the process,” Palmer added.

Under Otto Addo’s leadership, the Black Stars have struggled to find consistency, winning only two out of 14 games in the past football year. Addo, who was responsible for 10 of those matches, signed a three-year contract in March 2024, but his future with the team remains uncertain.

The Ghana FA has yet to make a formal decision regarding the coach’s position following the AFCON qualification failure. However, the Black Stars will return to action in March 2025 for Matchday 5 and 6 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

Osei Palmer’s remarks reflect growing discontent among fans and stakeholders, raising questions about the direction of the Black Stars under Otto Addo’s leadership.
