‘Kwesi Nyantakyi is the best GFA president to have ever emerged from the country’ – Alhaji Raji

Former chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Alhaji Raji, has named Kwesi Nyantakyi as the greatest Ghana Football Association (GFA) president in the country’s history.

Nyantakyi, who served as GFA president from 2005 to 2018, is widely celebrated for his transformative leadership and remarkable achievements during his tenure. His legacy includes guiding the Black Stars to their maiden FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006, where they impressed on their debut in Germany.

Under his stewardship, Ghana also qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Black Stars reached the quarterfinals, narrowly missing out on a historic semifinal berth. Nyantakyi further led the team to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, though Ghana exited at the group stage.

On the continental stage, Nyantakyi oversaw the Black Stars’ resurgence, with the team finishing as runners-up in the 2010 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His tenure also marked a groundbreaking moment for Ghanaian football, as the Black Satellites became the first African team to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009 in Egypt.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Alhaji Raji expressed his admiration for Nyantakyi’s leadership, stating, “Kwesi Nyantakyi is the best GFA president to have ever emerged from the country. He achieved a lot during his time in office. His only challenge was the other issues we all know about, but for me, he remains the best-ever GFA president.”

Nyantakyi’s tenure ended in controversy in 2018 following an exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which uncovered allegations of corruption within the GFA.

This led to his resignation and the establishment of a Normalisation Committee to oversee Ghanaian football until Kurt Okraku was elected as GFA president in 2019.
