The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially named seasoned German coach Winfried Anton Schafer as the new Technical Advisor for the Black Stars.
Schafer will also assume the role of Director of Football for the GFA, with a dual mandate to enhance the performance of Ghana’s senior national team and oversee the strategic development of football across the country.
“Winfried Anton Schafer, a seasoned and vastly experienced German manager, has been appointed as Technical Advisor of the Black Stars of Ghana and Director of Football for the Ghana Football Association. The German tactician, who won the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2002, will work closely with Head Coach Otto Addo to build a winning Black Stars team,” the GFA announced in a statement on Tuesday, January 28.
Schafer’s illustrious career spans over four decades, during which he has managed national teams including Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, as well as European clubs such as Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, VFB Stuttgart, and Borussia Berlin. His most celebrated achievement was leading Cameroon to victory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In his new role, Schafer will collaborate with Head Coach Otto Addo to revamp the Black Stars, providing technical expertise and leadership to ensure consistent performance on the field.
Beyond his advisory role with the Black Stars, Schafer’s responsibilities as Director of Football include:
- Developing and implementing long-term strategic plans for the GFA.
- Providing technical guidance aligned with Ghana’s football philosophy.
- Leading youth development initiatives to nurture the next generation of football talent.
- Ensuring high performance across all national teams.
The GFA expressed confidence that Schafer’s wealth of experience and proven track record will be instrumental in driving Ghanaian football to new heights.
