The Bono Regional Police Headquarters has arrested Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the owner and financier of Nsoatreman FC, in connection with violent clashes that erupted during a Ghana Premier League match.
The incident occurred on Sunday during the Matchday 19 fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Kronmansah Park. Chaos broke out as players and officials engaged in physical altercations, resulting in the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as “Pooley.”
Frimpong was reportedly stabbed to death by unidentified attackers during the violence.
Baffour Awuah, a former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and former Member of Parliament for the Sunyani West Constituency, has been arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. He is also accused of inciting fans, which allegedly contributed to the fatal confrontation.
In response to the incident, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has indefinitely suspended the Nana Kronmansah Park, despite Nsoatreman FC notifying the association of their intention to withdraw from the top flight.
The GFA has also scheduled an emergency meeting with Premier League clubs, key stakeholders, and supporters’ groups on Thursday and Friday to discuss measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Donkor has been assigned to lead the investigation as authorities work to ensure justice is served.
