Ghanaian defender Joseph Aidoo marked his long-awaited debut for Real Valladolid on Sunday, following an extended injury setback that kept him out for most of the season.
Aidoo suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg while on duty with the Ghana national team during a friendly against Mexico on October 14, 2023. The injury, which occurred around the 30th minute, sidelined him for months and limited his playing time upon his return to Celta Vigo, where he managed only a brief one-minute appearance.
In search of more playing opportunities, Aidoo made a winter transfer move to Valladolid, a club currently fighting to secure its place in La Liga.
The former Inter Allies defender was handed his first start for Valladolid in their 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. His presence in the squad is expected to strengthen their defense while offering him a chance to regain his top form.
Aidoo’s journey in European football began in 2015 when he signed with Swedish side Hammarby. His performances earned him a move to KRC Genk in Belgium two years later, where he continued to develop as a solid center-back. In 2019, he joined Celta Vigo, making 131 La Liga appearances and scoring three goals over his time with the club.
As he begins this new chapter with Valladolid, Aidoo will be keen to rebuild his form and help his new team in their battle for survival in the Spanish top flight.
His return to competitive action is a major step in his comeback, and Valladolid will be hoping he can reclaim the consistency that made him a reliable La Liga defender.
