Cameroonian Football Federation president, Samuel Eto’o has been cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being banned by both CAF and FIFA for going contrary to the rules and regulations of the football governing bodies.
Eto’s crime
CAF banned him after taking a role in a betting company as an ambassador. The two-time AFCON winner was hence, excluded from CAF’s governance committee in January 2025 in addition to a fine of $200k.
FIFA also banned him for six months from attending national team games after he violated regulations regarding discipline after he verbally abused an official during the U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia in 2024.
Will Eto’o compete in CAF’s presidential Election?
CAF’s elections for the continent’s representatives on the FIFA Council are coming up on March 12 2025, and it remains unknown whether Eto’o will contest or not. The big question now is, will Eto’o still want to stand just four days ahead of the big elections? Patrice Motsepe, CAF president is set to go unopposed on Wednesday after his first term has come to an end.
Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling
“Following a hearing on 3 March 2025, it is ordered that the CAF executive committee includes Eto’o in the list of candidates for election to the committee,” said a CAS statement.
“The CAS Panel considered that it was presented sufficient information to overturn the CAF Executive Committee’s decision concerning Eto’o’s ineligibility.
“It will be for the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting on 12 March to make its evaluation of the candidates.”
