Assistant Coach Desmond Ofei: We’re working to improve the Black Stars at every level

Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has disclosed that discussions have taken place with head coach Otto Addo regarding ways to enhance the senior national team.

Ghana’s Black Stars, four-time African champions, have faced a downturn in their performances. Following consecutive group-stage exits in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), they also failed to qualify for the 2025 tournament, which will be hosted in Morocco later this year.

Addressing the ongoing efforts to revamp the team, Ofei, who joined the technical setup after Ghana’s AFCON qualification setback, shared insights into his discussions with Technical Advisor Winfred Schieffer and Otto Addo.

“Yeah, it’s about trying to improve on every level. Like I said before, both on and off the pitch, we’ve identified areas where we need improvement, and it’s something we’ve been actively discussing,” he stated.

He further emphasized the behind-the-scenes efforts aimed at strengthening the team’s structure and strategy.

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to address any shortcomings and refine our approach. We’re collaborating with experienced professionals and a determined head coach who is hungry to achieve success—most importantly, qualifying for the World Cup.”

Ofei also underscored the crucial role of fan support in the team’s resurgence.

“It’s not just about the team; off the pitch, we need to regain the fans’ trust and bring back the love. That comes through performances and winning games. At this level, every team wants to qualify, so it’s up to us to deliver when it matters most.”

Before his appointment, Ofei had an impressive tenure with the Black Satellites, guiding them to a gold medal at the African Games in Accra and securing qualification for the U-20 AFCON.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars will reconvene later this month for their crucial Matchday five and six fixtures in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
