Veteran Ghanaian coach Maxwell Konadu has called on Ghanaians to show patience and support for Black Stars head coach Otto Addo as he continues to steer the national team through a rebuilding phase.
Speaking in an interview on Akoma 87.9 FM, Konadu acknowledged the intense passion Ghanaians have for football—a passion that, at times, can quickly turn to criticism when results don’t go as expected.
“Ghanaians adore football; when things go well, they lavish praise on you; when things go wrong, the country becomes split, and that is how the game has sadly become,” Konadu said, reflecting on the emotional swings that often surround the national team.
Otto Addo, who returned to lead the Black Stars following a previous stint, has faced both praise and scrutiny from fans and pundits alike. Konadu believes the coach needs time and patience to build a solid team capable of long-term success.
“We simply need to be patient occasionally (on Otto Addo), but how many individuals can be patient? Today’s generation will not be patient with you,” he noted, highlighting the fast-paced demand for success that defines modern football culture.
He went on to compare the situation in Ghana to football cultures in other countries, where, in his view, coaches often get more time and space to work professionally.
“It’s not only in Ghana, but elsewhere, where professionalism comes in and things are regarded a little differently than here,” Konadu explained. “But once the team have started winning, I don’t think there will be any problems again for the coach.”
