Gabonese international striker Aaron Boupendza has tragically passed away after falling from the eleventh floor of his apartment in China on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Romanian coach Marius Șumudică, who previously worked with Boupendza during his time at Turkish side Hatayspor.
According to local reports, the incident followed a disagreement between Boupendza and his brother shortly before the fatal fall. Authorities in China have launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with suicide, accidental fall, and foul play all being considered as potential causes.
The sudden death of the 28-year-old forward has sent shockwaves through the football community in Gabon and across the African continent.
Boupendza rose to prominence during the 2020/21 season in the Turkish Süper Lig, where he clinched the Golden Boot with an impressive 22 goals for Hatayspor. His football journey spanned several countries, including France, Qatar, Romania, Turkey, the United States, and most recently China, where he played for Zhejiang FC.
At the international level, Boupendza earned 34 caps for Gabon, scoring 8 goals and featuring in multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
