Mohammed Salisu can shine in Premier League - Former Sunderland defender

John Mensah firmly believes that fellow Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu has what it takes to succeed once again in the English Premier League. The former Black Stars captain has urged the AS Monaco center-back to consider a return to England, a league he describes as the best in the world.

Now 26, Salisu has already featured in three of Europe’s top five leagues. He began in Spain with Real Valladolid before making a name for himself at Southampton, where he spent three seasons and made over 60 appearances in the Premier League.

The towering defender made the switch to AS Monaco in the summer of 2023, and despite facing challenges with regular playing time, he has impressed in the games he’s featured. So far this season, Salisu has made 26 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals—one each in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the UEFA Champions League.

In an interview with Africa Foot, Mensah—who previously played for clubs like Lyon and Sunderland—shared his thoughts on Salisu’s potential and the value of a move back to the English top flight.

“He [Mohammed Salisu] has the qualities to thrive anywhere. He already knows the intensity and demands of the Premier League,” said Mensah.

The former national team captain believes a return to the Premier League would be an ideal step in Salisu’s career progression.

“A return to what I consider the best league in the world would be beneficial for his career,” he noted.
“But while he has options in Spain, Italy, or Germany, he also has the profile to shine there.”

Much like Salisu, John Mensah enjoyed a career across multiple elite European leagues and earned over 80 caps for the Black Stars. His guidance is based on years of top-level experience, and he remains confident that Salisu’s talent can lead him to success on any stage—especially in England.
