Arsenal great Ian Wright has thrown his full support behind midfielder Thomas Partey, urging the club to hand the Ghanaian a new contract as his current deal nears its end.
Partey, who joined Arsenal in 2020 on a five-year contract, is set to become a free agent this summer. His future has attracted interest from several European sides and clubs in the Saudi Pro League. Despite this, Arsenal are reportedly still considering their options before making a final decision on whether to offer the 31-year-old an extension.
Speaking in a recent interview, Wright made it clear where he stands, insisting the club should not hesitate to secure Partey’s services for the long term.
“I don’t see why we should be thinking about it—there’s nothing to think about,” Wright said firmly.
“Thomas Partey should be given another contract. It’s not easy to find a midfielder like Thomas.”
The former striker went on to praise Partey’s rare abilities, underlining how valuable he is to Mikel Arteta’s side.
“We don’t have many of them in the streets. He has shown that he deserves more and more,” Wright added.
Partey has battled through injuries this season but reminded everyone of his quality with a strong performance in Arsenal’s Champions League quarterfinal win over Real Madrid.
Though he missed Arsenal’s 1-0 first-leg loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates earlier this week, the experienced midfielder is expected to return to the squad for the crucial second leg in Paris on Wednesday night.
With such key moments ahead, Wright’s comments add further pressure on the club to make a firm decision about Partey’s future — a player many feel still has much to offer.
