Asante Kotoko are on the verge of completing the signing of Berekum Chelsea midfielder Hubert Gyau, with personal terms expected to be agreed this week, sources close to the negotiations have confirmed.
The 23-year-old has emerged as a top target for the Porcupine Warriors ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season as they look to bolster their midfield options under newly appointed head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum.
Negotiations between the two clubs are said to be in an advanced stage, with only a few formalities remaining before a full agreement is reached. While the transfer fee has not been disclosed, reports indicate that both clubs are close to sealing a deal that will see Gyau make the move to Kumasi after an impressive individual campaign with Berekum Chelsea.
Gyau was one of Berekum Chelsea’s standout performers during the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, making 29 appearances, scoring 4 goals, and registering 6 assists from central midfield. Known for his composure on the ball, intelligent positioning, and ability to link defense and attack, Gyau has developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the domestic league.
His performances were instrumental in Berekum Chelsea’s strong run of form in the second half of the season, which saw the club finish 8th on the league table after a shaky start. Gyau averaged 2.1 key passes per game, 1.8 tackles, and 1.3 interceptions, reflecting his effectiveness both offensively and defensively. He was also named Berekum Chelsea’s Player of the Month twice during the season—in February and April.
Kotoko’s interest in Gyau is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate their midfield following the departures of several key players, including Justice Blay and Richmond Lamptey, whose contracts expired at the end of the season. Coach Karim Zito is believed to be a strong admirer of Gyau’s versatility and work ethic, and sees him as a key component of his rebuilding project ahead of the CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
Should the deal go through, Gyau will become Asante Kotoko’s first major signing of the transfer window. He is expected to sign a three-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.
With the club eager to bounce back from a disappointing campaign that saw them finish outside the top four, Kotoko fans will be hoping the acquisition of Gyau signals a fresh and competitive era under Coach Zito’s leadership.
