Former Black Queens head coach, Mercy Quarcoo-Tagoe, has thrown her support behind the current national team despite their difficult start to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Ghana has managed just one point from their first two group matches—losing to South Africa and drawing 1-1 with Mali—leaving them on the brink of early elimination. The team must now defeat Tanzania in their final Group C clash to stand a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Tagoe, who previously coached the national team and worked with several of the current players, remains hopeful about their chances. In an interview with CAF Online, she expressed her belief in the squad’s ability to succeed.

“Women’s football has really evolved, and I’m grateful to see FIFA, CAF, and all the Member Associations pushing the game forward. Every Ghanaian wants to see the Black Queens win the trophy—and I’m no different,” she said. “I believe in these girls we have assembled. They have what it takes.”

This year marks Ghana’s return to WAFCON after missing the previous two editions. As three-time finalists, the Black Queens are eager to reclaim their place among Africa’s elite and end their title drought. Their final group game against Tanzania will be decisive in determining their fate in the tournament.
