Kumasi Mayor promises big cash rewards to Kotoko players if they beat Hearts of Oak

The stakes for Sunday’s Super Clash have skyrocketed, as Kumasi Mayor Richard Agyemang Boadi pledged substantial financial incentives to Asante Kotoko SC players if they defeat arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.

Addressing the team during a visit to their training session at Baba Yara Stadium, flanked by Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene and other dignitaries, the mayor delivered a stirring message to motivate the Porcupine Warriors.

“We want you to score, and on Monday, you will be financially rewarded. Beat them—Hearts of Oak,” he declared.

The timing of the mayor’s promise is crucial. Kotoko have struggled for consistency, winning just once in their last four matches across all competitions. Their recent results include a 3–1 league defeat to Heart of Lions FC in Kpando and a penalty shootout exit against Aduana Stars in the MTN FA Cup.

Mayor Boadi did not hold back, urging the players to make a bold statement on the pitch:

“If you are able to beat them by three or four goals on Monday, you will see the amount of money you will enjoy in this city. So play for each other, play for Kumasi, play for the regional minister, and play for Asanteman.”

Asante Kotoko currently sit fifth in the Ghana Premier League with 35 points, just one behind fourth-placed Hearts of Oak. Sunday’s clash at Baba Yara Stadium carries double significance: securing bragging rights in Ghana’s fiercest football rivalry and the chance to leapfrog their rivals in the league standings.

With the Ashanti Regional Minister present to witness the pledge, the message from Kumasi’s leadership was clear: this is more than just football—it is a matter of civic pride. Victory on Sunday could bring Kotoko more than three points; it could also deliver tangible rewards for the players and pride for the city of Kumasi.
