Former Ghana international Hans Sarpei has played down concerns over the Black Stars’ poor run in recent friendlies, insisting the results should not be used to judge the team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana have endured a difficult stretch, losing four consecutive friendly matches, with the latest defeat to Germany ultimately leading to the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo.

Despite the pressure that mounted on Addo—particularly after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON for the first time in two decades—Sarpei believes the coach deserved the chance to lead the team at the World Cup after securing qualification.

Speaking to JoySports, Sarpei stressed the significant difference between friendly matches and competitive tournaments.

“When we didn’t qualify for the AFCON, there was a lot of shouting. Then he qualified us for the World Cup. He brought the team to the World Cup; he should go with the team,” he said.

“World Cup and friendly games are totally different,” Sarpei added, urging patience and perspective in assessing the team’s performances.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association is actively searching for a new head coach, with names such as Kwesi Appiah, Walid Regragui, and Herve Renard being linked to the vacant position.

The Black Stars will continue their preparations with international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2 as they gear up for the tournament.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, and will be aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since their historic run in 2010.
