Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Frederick Ansah Botchway has expressed confidence that he is capable of earning a call-up to the Black Stars, while also questioning the national team’s selection approach.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, the midfielder stated that he still harbours ambitions of representing Ghana at senior level, insisting that his chances would improve if he were actively playing in the Ghana Premier League.
“Yeah, I do [want to play for the senior team],” he said. “And most importantly, I think here in Ghana they don’t normally select players from abroad [the smaller leagues]; they usually select those who are playing for the local teams.”
Botchway suggested that visibility in the domestic league plays a significant role in national team selection, adding that players outside Ghana’s top flight often struggle to gain recognition.
He explained that during his recent spell in Zimbabwe, he reflected on how his situation might have been different had he been performing in Ghana at the time.
“If I find myself playing in the local scene now, it’s possible, and it works. I believe I can play—not only for the Galaxies but also for the national team,” he added.
“I think when I was in Zimbabwe recently, I considered that if I had been here with some performances in our local league, maybe I could have gotten a chance at a call-up.”
