Former Ghana Football Association vice-president George Afriyie has questioned Desmond Ofei’s suitability to become the next head coach of the Black Stars, insisting that appointing him would be the wrong decision for the national team.
Ofei has reportedly emerged as one of the leading candidates being considered for the position as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The coaching position is expected to become vacant following the anticipated departure of Carlos Queiroz, whose four-month contract was due to expire after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the World Cup in North America, marking the Black Stars’ first appearance in that phase of the competition since 2010.
However, Afriyie, who previously served as chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, believes the national team needs a different level of experience and questioned why Ofei should be considered for the job.
“If today we are looking for a coach for the Black Stars and Desmond Ofei is the answer, then we have a problem,” he said.
Ofei has previously worked with Ghana’s Under-20 national team and has been linked with a promotion to the senior national side following Queiroz’s expected exit.
While discussing the coaching situation, Afriyie also expressed dissatisfaction with Queiroz’s tactical philosophy, despite the Portuguese coach successfully guiding Ghana into the World Cup knockout phase.
“As for Carlos Queiroz, I don’t like his defensive approach. It’s old-fashioned,” he added.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in September as preparations begin for the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The Ghana Football Association is therefore expected to make a decision on the next substantive head coach before the qualifiers get underway, with the choice likely to attract significant attention from supporters and football stakeholders.
For Afriyie, however, Desmond Ofei should not be the person entrusted with leading Ghana’s senior national team at this stage.
