The Ghana Football Association has appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, following the dismissal of Otto Addo on March 31, 2026.

Addo, who guided Ghana to qualification for a second consecutive FIFA World Cup, was relieved of his duties after heavy friendly defeats to Austria (5-1) and Germany (2-1).

The GFA confirmed that Queiroz, a 73-year-old African-born coach, will lead the team into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

In announcing his appointment, the GFA highlighted his vast experience, including leading South Africa to the 2002 World Cup, guiding Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managing Iran at three consecutive tournaments (2014, 2018, and 2022).

Ghana’s Predicted World Cup Squad Under Queiroz

Following his appointment, attention has quickly turned to the squad Queiroz is likely to select for the tournament, with limited time to make major changes.

Goalkeepers

Benjamin Asare is expected to remain Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper after establishing himself under Otto Addo. Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who featured at the 2022 World Cup, is also likely to be included, while Joseph Anang could edge out Joseph Wollacott for the third spot.

Defenders

Alexander Djiku remains a key figure in defence and is expected to anchor the backline. Jonas Adjetey is still in contention despite mixed performances in recent friendlies.

Jerome Opoku and Derrick Luckassen could also make the cut based on their club form, while Gideon Mensah is likely to retain his place at left-back. Derrick Kohn offers an additional option, and Caleb Yirenkyi’s versatility may prove valuable.

Marvin Senaya, Joseph Aidoo, and Kelvin Osei Asibey are among other defensive options, with Aidoo’s fitness and form likely to influence his inclusion.

Midfielders

Thomas Partey remains a central figure in midfield despite recent challenges, with Kwasi Sibo expected to partner him in a holding role.

Elisha Owusu continues to receive call-ups, while Ibrahim Sulemana could benefit from uncertainty surrounding Mohammed Kudus’ availability.

Forwards

Jordan Ayew is expected to lead the attack after an impressive qualifying campaign, supported by Antoine Semenyo, whose club form has been outstanding.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Kamaldeen Sulemana provide pace and creativity on the wings, while Inaki Williams remains a strong option despite inconsistent performances.

Christopher Bonsu Baah adds depth, with Prince Adu and Brandon Thomas-Asante offering alternative attacking options. Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer is also pushing for inclusion.

Final Outlook

With less than two months to the World Cup, Queiroz is expected to rely heavily on the core of the existing squad while making a few strategic adjustments.

Ghana, drawn in a tough group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, will be aiming to make a strong impression and improve on previous World Cup performances under their new coach.
