AS FAR head coach Alexandre Santos has confirmed that preparations for the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2025/26 final against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns are progressing well, marked by focus and discipline within the squad.

The match will take place in Pretoria on Sunday, 17 May (kick-off 14h00 GMT), and Santos stressed that everyone at the Moroccan club understands the importance of the historic occasion.

Santos explained that work is continuing on the tactical, physical and mental aspects of the team’s preparation in order to reach the highest possible level of readiness and represent AS FAR in the best possible way in the continental final.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with CAFOnline.com, the Portuguese coach underlined that the clash against Mamelodi Sundowns will not be easy because of the South African side’s strength and vast continental experience.

He added that he and his players are focused on tactical discipline, reducing mistakes and making the most of their opportunities in order to approach the game with confidence and strong character.

CAFOnline.com: How are AS FAR’s preparations going ahead of the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final?
Alexandre Santos: “Preparations are taking place in a positive atmosphere and with great focus from everyone at the club. The players understand the importance of this historic match, and every day we are working on tactical, physical and mental preparation so that we can be in the best possible condition and represent AS FAR and Morocco in the best way possible.”

You will face a strong opponent in Mamelodi Sundowns. What are the main areas you are focusing on in preparation for the first leg of the final?
“We know very well the strength of our opponents, Mamelodi Sundowns. They are a well-organised team with great continental experience. We are focusing on tactical discipline, reducing mistakes and making the most of the opportunities that come our way. We are also working a lot on the mental side so that the players enter the match with confidence and strong character.”

Do you believe the experience some of your players have in major African matches could make the difference in this encounter?
“Of course, experience is an important factor in matches like these. We have players who have lived through African competitions and know how to deal with pressure. But for me, the most important thing is the team spirit and the great desire I see in all the players to achieve this dream.”

What does it mean to be close to winning a continental title again after nearly 41 years since the club’s first and last triumph?
“This carries great responsibility and pride at the same time. AS FAR is a club with a rich history and its fans deserve to celebrate another continental title. We respect the club’s history and understand the value of this challenge, and we will fight to bring the trophy back to its natural place.”

How will you deal with the psychological pressure of a CAF Champions League final, especially against a team used to playing in finals?
“Pressure exists in every final, but it can become a positive motivation. We are working on keeping the players calm and focused, while approaching the match with great confidence and respect for the opponent, without fear. When you reach the final, it means you deserve to be there.”

What do you see as the main strengths of Mamelodi Sundowns?
“Mamelodi Sundowns are a strong team collectively. They are distinguished by their quick possession play and high tactical organisation, in addition to their great experience in African competitions. But we also have our strengths and the personality of a big team, and we will enter the match looking for a positive result.”

What would you like to say to AS FAR supporters ahead of this continental final?
“To our loyal supporters, I say thank you for your continuous support in all circumstances. You are our true source of strength, and we promise that we will fight on the pitch with full spirit and responsibility to make you happy and honour the AS FAR shirt. We need your support and trust because we are all one family with one goal.”
