Augustine Boakye is expected to miss Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team as the midfielder is likely to stay with his club for important promotion playoff matches in France.
The attacking midfielder recently earned his maiden call-up to the Ghana national football team squad ahead of the friendly encounter, which forms part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, his club side, AS Saint-Étienne, are preparing for a decisive promotion playoff after finishing third in the Ligue 2 standings.
Saint-Étienne will face OGC Nice in a two-legged playoff tie for a place in the French top division. The first leg is scheduled for May 26, only a few days after Ghana’s clash against Mexico on May 23, with the second leg set for May 29.
With promotion to Ligue 1 on the line, the French club are expected to retain their key players for the crucial fixtures.
Boakye has played an important role for Saint-Étienne this season and is likely to remain in France to support the club’s push for top-flight football.
As a result, the 26-year-old may have to wait a little longer for the opportunity to make his debut appearance for the Black Stars.
